So the obvious question is: "How do you get into a hammock?" and it goes with the obvious answer...."Carefully"
Next question that came to mind was (when we were needing to wake up at midnight for the 4 hour watch), "How do you get up at midnight? Easy, go to bed right after dinner at 7.00. So how do you get to sleep at 7.00? Easy, having woken up at 3.30 a.m. that morning for the 4.00 a.m. watch."
You can see how high off the floor the hammocks are. As I stood beside mine it was at nose level.
So let's see if I can describe this step by step... hang on to the rail on the ceiling, swing your legs up and, ah wait - look on youtube! of course! Here is Endeavour earlier on the voyage and this is filmed on the deck where we slept. In the background of this video is the companionway down to the 20th c deck. There is extra light getting in because the hatch has been removed (obviously they did not have the same problems with leaks as we did) but the video is still in some shadow. However, you'll get the gist of it. You hang onto the ceiling, swing yourself up, rearrange yourself in the hammock, and once its set - you're ready for sleep.

The following photos were taken at around 7.00 p.m. We had just finished dinner and with the prospect of a midnight shift....we headed for bed. However, it was the last night and none of us was really ready for sleep. So out came a camera and we took a few shots.
My hammock is on the left at the back of the photo, Fm 3 is on the right hand side, and Fm2 is in the foreground.

The object covered with a green tarpaulin on the left of this next photo is the cooking stove used in Cook's day. When the ship is in "museum mode" it is uncovered, but during our voyage it is kept under wraps. Fm2 at the front, then me at Fm1 then behind me is Fm3

Here is how close the hammocks are hung. Those are my feet in the middle.

Oh and to get out again in the morning.... you hang on with both hands to a hand rail in the deck above your head, support your weight on the rail, and swing your legs over the edge of the hammock and lower yourself to the floor. Can't wait to tell the trainer I worked with that all those exercises we did for my arms were not for the sail handling, nor for climbing the shrouds, nor for hauling on the sheets, but for getting in and out of bed.
